Poland: Illegal Aliens Arrested Near Warsaw

Warsaw, 20 September 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Polish police say they apprehended 163 illegal immigrants from Asia and Africa this week in a village near Warsaw.

Our correspondent reports that the arrests involved the largest group of illegal aliens detained in Poland in a single day in recent years.

The group included immigrants from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Liberia, India and Cameroon. Among them were four children and eight women, including one who was pregnant.

Police said they have not yet determined how and when the immigrants entered Poland. Authorities said most illegal aliens from Asia enter Poland in hopes of eventually traveling to Western European countries like Germany, Holland and France.
