Bishkek, 11 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- International financier George Soros will visit Bishkek this month, according to Kyrgyz reports.
Soros established one of his aid foundations in Bishkek in 1994. The chairwoman of the foundation is Professor Chinara Jakypova, a former education minister. She resigned in 1993 to protest government policies on education.
Soros, a Hungarian-born, American businessman, has given millions of dollars in grants to pro-reform and educational organizations in Eastern Europe and the former U.S.S.R.
U.S. Embassy Contest
The U.S. embassy this week announced a contest for Kyrgyz pupils who want to attend American schools. Applications will be accepted until October 22.
