Chechnya: Yandarbiyev Estimates Costs Of War


Moscow, 14 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- The Chechnya conflict has caused $140 billion in damage to the Chechen republic, says Chechen leader Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev.

Yandarbiev says 70 percent of schools and hospitals and kindergartens have been damaged, more than 500,000 people are homeless, and an additional 400,000 have left the republic. He claimed that there were 100,000 dead and 45,000 wounded. Yanderbiev's comments appear in a weekend edition of "Izvestia."

Russia's Interior Minister Anatoly Kulikov has put the total death toll at 18,000. Russian Security Council Secretary Aleksandr Lebed has put the total death toll at about 80,000.
