Serbia: Milosevic Foes Keep Pressure On Serbian Leader

Belgrade, 26 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - Political foes of Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic today appealed to Serbia's Supreme Court to reinstate results of recent municipal elections. The court must rule before tomorrow, when lower courts ordered voting to be repeated.

Yesterday, tens of thousands of people attended an opposition rally in Belgrade. It was the eighth straight day of protests against decisions by Socialist-dominated authorities to annull municipal election results in towns and cities where members of the opposition Zajedno (Together) coalition has claimed victory.

Zajedno has claimed victory in 44 towns and cities across Serbia in voting November 17. An opposition victory in Belgrade was initially confirmed by authorities, but that result was overturned in a court decision two days ago.

Yesterday, crowds pelted government buildings with eggs. Reports say more street protests are expected later today.
