Poland: Murdered Solidarity Chaplain To Be Beatified

Warsaw, 27 December 1997 (RFE/RL) -- The Catholic Primate of Poland, Cardinal Jozef Glemp, says that the murdered Polish priest Jerzy Popieluszko will be beatified.

In a sermon yesterday in Warsaw, Glemp said that all the necessary documents have been gathered. Popieluszko, who was a chaplain to the Polish Solidarity movement, which at the time was the center of dissent against the communist regime, was murdered in 1984 by four Polish interior ministry officers.

Glemp said the beatification process, first step toward sainthood in the Roman Catholic church, probably will begin next February.
