Belarus: Chairman Of Disbanded Parliament Visits Warsaw

Warsaw, 9 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - Our Warsaw correspondent reports the chairman of Belarus' disbanded Supreme Soviet, Semyon Sharetsky, has managed to travel to Poland. Sharetsky plans a news conference at the Polish Parliament building, and meetings with Polish officials.

Sharetsky had previously been denied permission to cross the border into Poland after being informed that his diplomatic passport had been revoked. Former President Stanislav Shushkevich was also recently prevented from crossing the border.

Also currently visiting Poland is Zyanon Paznyak, a leader of the opposition Belarus Popular Front. Paznyak has spent most of his time in the United States since being granted political asylum by Washington last summer. Paznyak was out of the country last year when Belarus authorities issued a warrant for his arrest.
