Yugoslavia: Montenegro's Foreign Minister Dies


Belgrade, 17 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - The Foreign Minister of the Yugoslav Republic of Montenegro, Janko Jeknic, died today in a car crash.

Jeknic's secretary, reached by phone in the Montenegrin capital Podgorica, confirmed reports that Jeknic was killed in the accident on the Podgorica-Danilovgrad road near Komanski Most.

The Montenegrin News agency reported that Jeknic's car collided with a bus that had stopped on the side of the road. It said a woman passenger in the car was seriously injured. No other details are known.

Jeknic served as head of protocol and consul for economic affairs in the Yugoslav consulate in Milan, Italy, before becoming Foreign Minister of Montenegro.
