Poland: Striking Doctors Threaten To Broaden Action

Warsaw, 3 February 1997 (RFE/RL) - Striking Polish doctors say they will broaden their protest actions today if the government does not agree to talks.

The doctors have been on strike since December 8, but the Ministry of Health is refusing to negotiate with them.

The doctors say if the government does not agree to begin talks today, they will no longer fully fill in death certificates.

Our correspondent says this step is another form of pressure on the government to give doctors back pay, overtime pay and other benefits for doctors at all state health institutions.
