Hungary: Anti-Semitic Remarks Embroil Smallholder Party

Budapest, 2 April 1997 (RFE/RL) - Reports in Hungary today focus on the possible dismissal of Agnes Nagy Maczo as a Parliament deputy chair because of remarks she made that were widely viewed as anti-Semitic.

Maczo is a member of the opposition Smallholders' Party. Top leaders of the governing coalition, including Prime Minister Gyula Horn and Zoltan Gal of the Socialist Party, met yesterday to challenge the Smallholders' to denounce Maczo's remarks.
