Czech Republic/Serbia: Havel Gives Campaign Advice To Opposition Leader

By Natasa Borcanin

Prague, 1 May 1997 (RFE/RL) - Czech President Vaclav Havel gave Serbia's opposition Zajedno coalition leader, Vesna Pesic, advice on electoral campaign strategy during her visit to Prague yesterday.

Pesic told RFE/RL Havel urged greater discipline and effective strategy within the coalition. She says the president also suggested that the opposition presidential candidate should be an independent figure who would appeal to a broader electorate.

Pesic says Havel also expressed regret concerning accusations by Serbia's state-controlled media several years ago that he disliked Serbs. According to Pesic, Havel simply disagreed with the political regime in Belgrade.
