Romania: Miners' Strike Continues As Factory Workers Also Walk Out

Bucharest, 16 June 1997 (RFE/RL) -- A strike by Romanian coalminers continued today for a fourth day in Petrosani, in the southern Jiu Valley, and spread to the Filipetii de Padure mining area near Ploiesti.

The strikers are pressing a list of demands, including 45 percent higher wages and retirement at age 45.

An estimated 10,000 miners staged a protest rally today in Petrosani, the heart of the state-owned coalmining industry. At the same time around 300 miners set up a road blockade with trucks and buses on the Bucharest-Ploiesti highway.

In other industrial action, some 7,000 workers at a state-owned truck plant in Brasov also went on strike over plans to lay off nearly half their work force. Plans call for 3,000 of the employees at the Roman truck factory to be laid off when the state-owned factory is privatized.
