Brussels, 23 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - NATO Secretary General Javier Solana arrived today in Sarajevo to consult Bosnia's leadership and commanders of the Alliance-led, peace-implementation force (SFOR).
Our Brussels correspondent reports Solana also will meet the international community's new High Representative to Bosnia, Carlos Westendrop. Germany's DPA news agency reports that, among topics on Solana's agenda, is the return to civilian control of Bosnia's four main airports (Mostar, Banja Luka, Tuzla and Sarajevo).
Solana also has separate meetings scheduled with representatives of Muslim, Serb and Croat communities. The six-month review of SFOR will be held next month. The consultations will consider, among other issues, the request of military commanders for a temporary reinforcement of troop levels during the period of local elections, scheduled for September 13-14.
