Tajikistan: U.S. Welcomes Peace Agreement

Washington, 30 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - The United States welcomed a peace agreement signed Friday between the Tajik government and opposition forces.

State Department spokesman John Dinger said it represents an historic opportunity for Tajikistan to enter into a new political stage of lasting national reconciliation, stability and economic development.

Dinger said the United States is very pleased, but warns that Tajikistan is now entering a period of transition and the true test lies ahead.

Dinger also urged all factions in the four-year civil war to take full advantage of peace and to refrain from action that could renew the civil conflict.
