Tajikistan: Reconciliation Commission Favors 'General Forgiveness'

Moscow, 9 July 1997 (RFE/RL)- The Tajik Reconciliation Commission held its first session with all members in attendance today and voted in favor of an agreement on "general forgiveness" to participants in the Tajik civil war.

Members are expected to vote tonight or tomorrow on adopting an act on general amnesty. The act will be a recommendation to the Tajik parliament who then must officially approve it.

After tomorrow's session, the members of the commission will adjourn with half returning to Dushanbe and the other half to Tehran. Pending the Tajik parliament's acceptance of the general amnesty, members of the commission who represent the Tajik opposition are still considered outlaws in Tajikistan.

The session took place in Moscow. Russia and others have been mediating the dispute.
