Georgia: President To Visit U.S. Next Week

Washington, 10 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze will visit Washington next week for five days of meetings with American officials.

A spokesman for the Georgian embassy in Washington says Shevardnadze is also expected to meet U.S. President Bill Clinton during the visit from July 17 to 21.

Details of the Georgian President's U.S. visit are still being worked out, according to the spokesman, but the focus will be on economic, finance and trade development. A number of Georgian ministers, including those of foreign affairs, transport, trade and foreign economic relations, fuel and energy, and finance, are expected to accompany Shevardnadze.

Shevardnadze is planning to lead the ministers in a meeting with more than 50 U.S. business leaders in a forum July 17 sponsored by the U.S. Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) to encourage investment in Georgia.
