Bosnia: Coalition Urges More Action On Alleged War Criminals

Washington, 15 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - A coalition of prominent Americans, including former Republican Party presidential candidate and retired U.S. Senator Robert Dole, is urging President Bill Clinton to ensure that more alleged war criminals from the former Yugoslavia are brought to justice.

The Washington-based Coalition for International Justice plans to hold a news conference today and release the text of a letter it will send to Clinton.

The coalition says it is distressed that Bosnian Serbs indicted for war crimes are, in the group's words, living with impunity in the Bosnian zone protected by the U.S. troops in the NATO-led peace stabilization force (SFOR). The coalition has urged Clinton to ensure that the U.S. forces in Bosnia meet their moral obligation to bring alleged war criminals to justice.

British troops in the NATO contingent took one suspected war criminal into custody last week and shot dead another who had resisted arrest.
