Moldova/Romania: Defense Ministers Sign Military Agreement

Prague, 24 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - Moldovan Defense Minister Valeriu Pasat, on the first of a two-day visit to Romania, today signed with his Romanian counterpart Victor Babiuc an agreement on cooperation in military transportation.

Moldovan Chief of Staff Colonel Vladimir Dontu told the RFE/RL Chisinau bureau in a telephone conversation from Bucharest that the Moldovan army is keen on familiarizing itself with Romanian military instruction.

He said the two countries' military forces' collaboration is limited to exchanging experience on military training but there are no joint maneuvers outside participation in the Partnership for Peace program. Dontu said the most important thing for Moldova was the fact that Bucharest offered the instruction at no cost, since Moldova was too poor to afford it.
