Slubice, Poland; 28 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - Correspondents say flood waters near the Polish town of Slubice have eased slightly this morning after more than 15,000 people were evacuated at the weekend to escape the swollen waters of the Oder River.
But authorities say the real test for Slubice and the nearby German city of Frankfurt An Der Oder will come later today when another surge of flood water is expected there. Local authorities say the dikes protecting the area are waterlogged and at risk of breaking in several locations. Thousands of people in eastern Germany reportedly are ready to evacuate their homes at a moment's notice.
Meanwhile, floodwaters in the Czech Republic fell further today with only a few villages left on alert. More than 100 people have died in connection with the recent floods in Poland and the Czech Republic.
