Yerevan, 31 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - Ruben Shugaryan, Armenia's ambassador to the United States, told journalists in Yerevan yesterday that Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrossyan will visit the United States either later this year or at the beginning of next year.
Shugaryan said the fact that the presidents of neighboring Georgia and Azerbaijan have been invited to Washington this month should not be interpreted as "preferential treatment" on the part of the United States. Shugaryan said the interests of the United States in the Transcaucasus are "not limited to [Caspian] oil", but did not specify what those other interests are.
