Hungary: Communist State Security Documents To Be Available

Prague, 14 August 1997 (RFE/RL) - Hungarian officials say the Historical Office hosting communist state security documents will be open from 1 September to researchers and those who believe they were under observation under the communist regime. The head of the office, Gyoergy Marko, says the office will be set up temporarily in the hall of the Interior Ministry building in Budapest, before it moves to a permanent home. Marko estimated that in the summer of 1989 some 160,000 people had personal files at the security services. He said it could take up to five years to process the approximately 15-20 million pages.
