Russia: Mir Crew Gets Closer Look At Damage

Moscow, 15 August 1997 (RFE/RL) - The replacement crew aboard Mir left the crippled space station for about 45 minutes today to get a closer look at the damage caused by June's collision with a supply ship.

The two Russians and one American boarded the Soyuz escape capsule and flew to the opposite side of the space station to film the damaged Spektr module. Today's brief voyage comes one day after cosmonauts Vasily Tsibliyev and Alexander Lazutkin returned to earth.

Today's trip also was needed to move the Soyuz capsule from one side of Mir to the other to make room for a cargo vessel that will redock with the Mir on Sunday.
