Kazan, Tatarstan, Russia; 29 August 1997 (RFE/RL) - Our correspondent in Kazan reports the presidents of Tatarstan and Bashkortistan signed a bilateral treaty of friendship and cooperation in Kazan yesterday.
The 10-year accord calls for deepening economic integration.
Its signing comes six years after the two republics in central Russia signed a treaty pledging respect for each other's territorial integrity. Some one million ethnic Tatars live in Bashkortistan.
The Bashkir delegation is in Kazan to participate in the Second World Congress of Tatars.
