Tajikistan: Joint Commission To Welcome Opposition Leader

Dushanbe, 8 September 1997 (RFE/RL) - The leader of Tajikistan's Islamic opposition Said Abdullo Nuri may still arrive later today in Dushanbe.

Nuri's arrival was scheduled earlier today but was postponed because of disagreements over the number of supporters accompanying him from Teheran. Nuri, who is chairman of a National Reconciliation Commission, is to take part in Tajik Independence Day celebrations tomorrow. The National Reconciliation Commission was set up under a June peace deal.

An opposition spokesman however said earlier today that Nuri's arrival was postponed because Dushanbe authorities unexpectedly demanded a cut in the size of his delegation. Makhmadsharif Khimatzoda also said that police had dispersed crowds gathered at the airport to welcome Nuri.

Another opposition spokesman, Yusuf Khakimov, however said later that an agreement had been reached and that Nuri and his supporters will be met at the airport by a joint working commission.
