Georgia: Talks On Separatist Dispute Expected


Sukhumi, 9 September 1997 (RFE/RL) - Abkhaz officials says talks on the Georgia-Abkhazia dispute will be held in Sukhumi today. The separatist region will be represented by a team led by the president of the self-proclaimed republic, Vladislav Ardzinba.

Tbilisi will be represented by Georgia's Ambassador to Moscow, Vazha Lordkipanidze, and Moscow will be represented by First Deputy Foreign Minister Boris Pastukhov. The head of the United Nations observer team in the region, Livio Bota, will also participate.

Interfax news agency says the meeting it expected to focus on two long-unresolved issues: the political status of Abkhazia and the return of refugees.
