Bosnia: NATO Jamming Pro-Karadzic Broadcasts

Sarajevo, 20 October 1997 (RFE/RL) -- NATO officials said today they have deployed a special jamming aircraft over Bosnia to block pirate TV broadcasts by Bosnian Serbs loyal to indicted war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic.

NATO spokesman John Blakeley said the plane began flying last night in an area of eastern Bosnia out of reach of four transmitters now controlled by the peace-keeping force.

Meanwhile, earlier today, UN police confirmed reports that an explosion damaged a transmitter used by supporters of Karadzic in the eastern town of Bijeljina. The blast occured in the early morning hours on the roof of an office building in the city. No injuries were reported. An investigation into the blast is continuing.

Control over television and police forces is at the center of a power struggle between Karadzic loyalists in Pale and supporters of Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic in Banja Luka.
