Bosnia: NATO And Russia To Increase Troops

Brussels, 24 October 1997 (RFE/RL) -- NATO and Russia agreed at talks in Brussels today on the need to reinforce the NATO-led peacekeeping force in Bosnia ahead of Bosnian Serb elections next month.

The Permanent Joint Council, a consultative body which brings together Russia and the alliance's 16 members, agreed to support a "modest" increase in the 35,000-member force.

No exact number was mentioned. A final decision on the increase is to be made at a later date, by NATO's North Atlantci Council, the alliance's top policymaking body.
