Yugoslavia: Montenegrin President Criticizes Milosevic

Prague, 25 November 1997 (RFE/RL) - Montenegro's new president has accused Yugoslav Federal President Slobodan Milosevic of acting politically irresponsible before and after last month's Montenegrin presidential elections.

In an interview with our correspondent, Milo Djukanovic said Milosevic did not personally participate in what he called incorrect activities against Montenegro. But he said what he called harangues by state controlled media in Serbia against Montenegro were carried out by leaders of parties headed by Milosevic and his wife. Montenegro and Serbia comprise the rump Yugoslavia.

Djukanovic, who is a fierce critic of Milosevic, said there is no doubt that the harangues took place with Milosevic's knowledge and that he had the opportunity to influence the action. Djukanovic charged that such political activities and actions by state-controlled media, were an attempt to destabilize Montenegro.
