World: Unemployment Conference Begins

Tokyo, 28 November 1997 (RFE/RL) - Employers attending a two-day summit on unemployment in Japan said today that workers can no longer expect jobs for life and must at the same time improve their skills to cope with advancing technology and new market conditions.

Ministers and senior officials of labor and trade ministries from the Group of Seven (G-7) leading industrialized states and Russia are attending the conference in Kobe.

Japan's Labor Minister, Bummei Ibuki, said that his country, among others, must push ahead with a full restructuring of the labor market in order to promote growth and employment. He said the U.S. and Britain are several steps ahead in creating a flexible new labor market.
