Yugoslavia: Orthodox Church Calls For End To Violence Against Serbs

Pristina/Belgrade, 29 June 1999 (RFE/RL) - The leaders of the Serbian Orthodox Church have appealed to U.S. President Bill Clinton and United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to stop ethnic Albanian reprisal attacks on Serbs in Kosovo. In a letter to a range of western leaders, church bishops warned that Kosovo could become an ethnically pure territory -- populated by ethnic Albanians -- unless efforts are stepped up to halt violence and end the departure of the Serbian minority from the province. Officials in the NATO-led Kosovo peacekeeping force said they hope attacks against Serbs will start to subside following the start of demilitarization by the ethnic Albanian Kosovo Liberation Army.
