Yugoslavia: Suspected Arson Destroys Kosovo Television Building

Pristina, 18 October 1999 (RFE/RL) - A report from Kosovo says a fire set by suspected arsonists has destroyed the television building in Pristina. A NATO spokesman said three NATO peacekeepers sustained minor injuries while escaping the flames early today. There were no other reported injuries. The Associated Press says local, NATO, and United Nations firefighting crews got the blaze under control about two hours after it began. It is unknown who set the fire, which began at a nearby store, and what the motive might have been. NATO and UN police are investigating what officials said was a definite case of arson. The fire is believed to be one of the worst attacks of arson since the end of fighting in Kosovo and the arrival of NATO-led troops in June.
