Moscow, 9 May 2000 (RFE/RL) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin today led celebrations in Moscow to mark the 55th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany. The focus of the celebration was a huge military parade in the center of the capital. With many millions of Soviet dead and about two million living war veterans, World War II -- known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War -- retains major significance in the country.
