Yugoslavia: Opposition Demands Recount, OSCE Wants Verification

Belgrade, 29 September (RFE/RL) - A Serbian Democratic Opposition spokesman says that opposition presidential candidate Vojislav Kostunica has called for a recount of ballots in last Sunday's Yugoslav election. He made the announcement to thousands of supporters rallying in the central square of Belgrade. In Vienna today, the OSCE called for international experts to verify the disputed election results. Earlier in Belgrade, opposition party leaders said they have sent to Russian officials copies of polling records proving their victory.

The government of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic says that neither side achieved a majority in the vote and that a runoff election is required. The opposition contends that its candidate, Kostunica, emerged with a clear victory of over 50 percent and that no runoff is required.
