Yugoslavia: Milosevic Makes Campaign Appearance

Djerdap, Yugoslavia; 12 September 2000 (RFE/RL) - Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic made his first campaign appearance for re-election today while opening a section of a power plant. Before pressing the switch on the new part of the plant in Djerdap, near Romania, Milosevic said that his nation has remained unconquered and undefeated by what he called "foreign traitors." He congratulated those who "helped rebuild Yugoslavia" and said that now is the time for "great creativity and patriotism" in the country. Milosevic spoke to thousands of flag-waving and cheering supporters who were bused in for the ceremony. His appearance comes less than two weeks before 24 September presidential and parliamentary elections.
