Yugoslavia: Kostunica Shouted Down By Milosevic Backers

Mitrovica, Yugoslavia; 14 September (RFE/RL) - Supporters of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic today booed his strongest challenger in upcoming elections, Vojislav Kostunica, off a podium before he could address a rally in the divided Kosovar city of Mitrovica. Kostunica, the leading opposition candidate in the 24 September Yugoslav presidential election, is today touring isolated Serbian enclaves in Kosovo in a bid to win votes. Kostunica attempted to speak to the crowd in Mitrovica, but they threw eggs and tomatoes until he was taken from the stage by security guards.

Milosevic's supporters then grew more violent, attacking Kostunica's convoy and smashing windshields. No one was injured.
