Daghestan: Political Leader Shot In Makhachkala

Makhachkala, 16 November 2000 (RFE/RL) - Russian media reported today that Daghestani political leader Magomed Khachilayev was gunned down and seriously wounded overnight in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia's southern republic of Daghestan. Daghestani police believe that Khachilayev, leader of the Lak national movement and chairman of Daghestan's peace committee, was shot in the head by his own bodyguard during a quarrel. Doctors describe his condition as serious. A woman was killed in the incident.

In 1998 Khachilayev and his younger brother Nadirshakh were convicted for organizing mass protests in the streets of Makhachkala and seizing the local government's headquarters. They were later amnestied by Daghestan's Supreme court.
