Daghestan: Authorities Uncover Terrorist Group

Moscow, 1 February 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Authorities in Daghestan say they have broken up a terrorist group allegedly responsible for a bomb attack that killed several Russian soldiers last month. Daghestan's prosecutor general said the group was led by Rappani Khalilov. The prosecutor, Imam Yaraliev, said Khalilov is responsible for a number of other attacks carried out last year.

YarAliyev said 12 members of the group had been arrested and charged with terrorism and membership in an illegal armed group. It was not clear if Khalilov was among them.

At least seven Russian soldiers died in the 18 January bomb attack in the Daghestani capital Makhachkala. Russia's FSB security police originally linked the attack with top Chechen warlord Khattab. Last month, Daghestani authorities first arrested, then released, 10 bombing suspects.
