Montenegro: Government Loses Parliamentary Majority

Podgorica, 20 March 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic lost his majority support in parliament today when the pro-independence Liberal Alliance left the ruling coalition. The Alliance leader, Miodrag Zivkovic, said that Djukanovic "defrauded the electoral body" last week in Belgrade by signing an agreement to keep Montenegro in a union with Serbia for at least the next three years.

The agreement would also change the name of the union from the Yugoslav Federation to Serbia and Montenegro. It gives no clear time frame for the "harmonization" process of the two republics.

The agreement is to become binding following its ratification by the parliaments of the two Yugoslav republics as well as by the federal parliament.
