Afghanistan: Officials Stop Car-Bomb Attempt

Kabul, 29 July 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Afghanistan's Interior Ministry says two men arrested in Kabul in an explosive-laden car have confessed to planning a car-bomb attack. General Din Mohammad Jurat, head of public security at the Interior Ministry, said the car was packed with hundreds of kilos of explosives, which were discovered when the vehicle got caught up in a chance traffic accident yesterday.

Jurat said the suspects had two potential targets: a cabinet member or the International Security Assistance Force base.

Jurat said authorities believe the men have links to the Al-Qaeda terrorist network. He said both of the men are Afghans although earlier reports said one of the men appeared to be a foreigner.
