NATO: Georgia To Bid For Membership This Month

Tbilisi, 6 November 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Two days after saying it was too early for his country to seek admission to NATO, Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze now says his country will make an official bid to join the military alliance at its upcoming summit this month in Prague. Shevardnadze said today that NATO had agreed to consider Georgia's application during the 21-22 November summit, but he wouldn't say when his nation could become a member.

Two days ago, Shevardnadze said Georgia is "unprepared for NATO membership" and that Tbilisi will need several years to get up to the standards of NATO membership.
