Iraq: Bush Declares Major Combat Over

Aboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, 2 May 2003 (RFE/RL) -- U.S. President George W. Bush says the major combat operation in Iraq is over and the U.S. and its allies have prevailed. Bush said Iraq is "one victory" in war on terrorism. He made the comments to hundreds of U.S. sailors in a speech aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier off the California coast early this morning.

Bush thanked the armed forces of the coalition partners for their support. The U.S. leader said the military success in Iraq serves as success in the broader war on terror.

Bush stopped short of declaring victory in Iraq or an end to the war.

He said difficult work remained in Iraq, including the search for hidden chemical and biological weapons. Bush said the U.S. is now bringing order to Iraq, and helping rebuild the country.
