Serbia: Police Detain 23 People In Connection With Croatian War Crimes

Belgrade, 26 May 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Serbia's Interior Ministry today said police have detained 23 people in connection with the massacre of more than 200 civilians in the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar in 1991. The ministry statement gave no details about the 23 detainees.

The UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague has indicted three former Yugoslav army officers for their role in the slaying of over 200 Croatian civilians and prisoners of war after Serb-led troops captured Vukovar in late 1991.

Two of the suspects, Miroslav Radic and Mile Mrksic, have already been turned over to the tribunal. A third suspect, Veselin Sljivancanin, remains at large.
