Romanian, Russian Presidents To Sign Treaty In Moscow

Moscow, 4 July 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Romanian counterpart Ion Iliescu (pictured) are scheduled to sign a new treaty on bilateral relations today in Moscow. Iliescu said the treaty reflects "evolution over the past few years," after talks yesterday with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, who said the accord will open "a new page in relations between the two countries."

Kasyanov said a large group of Romanian businessmen had traveled to Russia in search of new contacts. He said that would help "broaden and deepen" economic ties.
