Iraq: U.S. Soldier Killed Northeast Of Baghdad


Baquba, Iraq; 11 August 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The United States military says a U.S. soldier was killed and two others wounded late last night in the Iraqi city of Baquba, some 60 kilometers northeast of Baghdad. U.S. military officials said the soldiers were hit with an improvised, or homemade, explosive device while guarding a police station.

In Baghdad, two grenades were reported to have exploded not far from the British Embassy. Two Iraqis were reported slightly injured.

In the southern Iraqi city of Basra, the situation has been reported calm today following rioting during the weekend. British troops are reported to have restored electricity to parts of Basra and were overseeing the distribution of gasoline.

Two people, an Iraqi and a Nepalese Gurkha security guard, were killed in the weekend unrest in Basra.
