Kyiv, 24 October 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The former head of police investigations into the 2000 unsolved killing of Ukrainian journalist Heorhiy Gongadze has been arrested. The Prosecutor-General's Office said Oleksiy Pukach was jailed yesterday, but declined to specify under which charges. There has been speculation recently in Ukraine that members of a gang of corrupt police officers played a role in Gongadze's death.
Gongadze was an Internet journalist who crusaded against government corruption. His headless body was found in a forest outside Kyiv.
President Leonid Kuchma has denied opposition claims that he was involved in the killing.
