Iraq: Bush Says No Premature Withdrawal Of U.S. Forces

Washington, 15 November 2003 (RFE/RL) -- U.S. President George W. Bush said yesterday his administration wants to begin transferring power to the Iraqi people at an early date but that American troops will stay in Iraq until their job is done. Bush said after a White House meeting yesterday with Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi the job is for Iraq to be free and peaceful.

Bush said that in terms of security, the U.S.-led coalition will do whatever it takes to defeat the enemy. He said the U.S. troops are responding to the changing tactics by insurgents, which include suicide bombings and hit-and-run attacks.
