Azerbaijan's journalistic community marked on July 17 the birthday of Elmar Huseynov, the editor of the journal "Monitor," who was murdered outside his apartment on March 2, 2005. Although there have been a number of arrests and confessions, his killers are still at large. After Huseynov's death, his magazine, which systematically investigated corruption, was closed and his deputy arrested and jailed for eight years. The EU and United States have often criticized Azerbaijan for its record on media freedom.
