VLADIVOSTOK, Russia -- Sergei Darkin was approved today to another term as the governor of Russia's far eastern Primorsky Krai by the region's legislative assembly, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
Only one assembly deputy voted against Darkin, while 31 voted for him.
Darkin's candidacy for a third term as governor of the Pacific region was proposed by President Dmitry Medvedev on January 5.
Viktor Ilyukhin, a member of the Communist Party faction in the Russian Duma, and Viktor Cherepkov, the former mayor of Vladivostok, the region's capital, criticized Medvedev's proposal and said it discredits the government.
Darkin, 46, has governed Primorsky Krai since June 2001.
In February 2005, he was the first governor to be reappointed by the president in accordance with the new regulation that eliminated gubernatorial elections in favor of regional leaders being appointed by the Kremlin.
In recent years, two deputy governors and another top official in his administration have been prosecuted for alleged wrongdoing.
In May 2008, Darkin was questioned and his house and office were searched as part of an investigation into alleged abuses during the privatization of state property.
