NOVOSIBIRSK, Russia -- A man suspected of assaulting an elementary school teacher in the west Siberian city of Novosibirsk has turned himself in to the police for questioning, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Police launched an extensive search after the man did not show up for questioning on December 4.

According to investigators, the man hit a female teacher in front of class pupils on December 3, threatening to kill her unless she stopped "deliberately marking down his step-daughter's grades."

The victim, elementary class teacher Irina Isayeva, has submitted her resignation without specifying the reason for her decision.

It is the second case of assault on a teacher in Russia in the last month. In November, a female teacher was severely beaten by a male assailant in front of her class in St. Petersburg. That case is still being investigated.
