DUSHANBE -- Heavy snow in northern Tajikistan has caused avalanches that have killed two people, RFE/RL's Tajik Service reports.

The unusually heavy snowfall started on November 7. Tajikistan's State Weather Forecast center had issued a warning that heavy snow was expected from November 7 to November 9.

The Tajik Ministry for Emergency Situations informed journalists on November 8 that two local men and their livestock were killed by an avalanche in the Obburbon the previous day.

Some residents of villages in northern Tajikistan told RFE/RL by phone that the situation is very serious. They say all roads leading to the important Shakhriston pass are blocked by snow.

They also complain that the major state-run electricity provider, Barki Tojik, has introduced energy rationing.

As a result, some villages have electricity only for 4-6 hours a day, mainly early in the morning and late in the evening.
