Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said if Moldova signs an Association Agreement with the European Union it could complicate efforts to resolve the conflict over the breakaway Transdniester region.

Rogozin, who was expected in Moldova on September 2, said on Rossia 24 television that Russia would review its agreements with Moldova.

He hinted that closer relations with the EU would mean "cutting relations" with Russia, with grave consequences for Moldovan goods, migrant workers, and Transdniester.

The region has been de facto independent since the early 1990s and is supported by Moscow.

Rogozin said signing an Association Agreement does not mean joining the EU but rather being placed "in an anteroom where they may be kept rather long and at the same time twisted around [the EU's] little finger."

Based on reporting by Rossia 24 and ITAR-TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
